Karen Perez, Hacia, Project Facilitator

Karen Perez is a former Hacia: Toward the University participant and now works as a Project Facilitator. Karen works with students in a one-on-one setting, and facilitates family workshops and the HACIA tutoring mentoring program.

Karen was born in Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico and raised in Albuquerque. She is a first generation college student in her family and is currently a Senior at the University of New Mexico where she is working on a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education (with an endorsement in bilingual teaching) and a minor in Spanish.

My personal experience with Hacia was valuable, beneficial and life changing. I am a first generation student, and had minimum knowledge about college enrollment. My parents had only attended elementary school, which made it challenging for them to understand and give the support needed for college enrollment. My mom insisted on coming to a Hacia workshop and she was very impressed that the workshop was in Spanish and focused on the college process. Toward the end of the workshop we were speechless, but felt very confident with the whole process.

The major impact that Hacia has had in my life has been overwhelming. My mother started to have more communication with me and was more involved with my education. She became a guide and a great supporter in all decisions I came across.

Thanks to Hacia my dreams are coming to life. Hacia has been a life changing experience for my family and me.
